Welcome!

What is cognitive neuroscience?

"Cognitive neuroscience takes on cognitive concepts and
studies mind/brain matters with psychophysical and brain imaging techniques
such as fMRI, MR, PET, and ERP`s"

from:
Gazzaniga M.S, Ivry R.B., Mangum G.R. (2002)
Cognitive Neuroscience. The Biology of mind. 2nd. ed.
W.W. Norton & Norton Company, New York.

"The last decade of the 20th century, the Decade of the Brain,
has also been the Decade of Cognitive Neuroscience.
It has been decade in witch the merger of cognitive psychology
and neural science has begun to realize its promise"

Albright T.D., Kandel E.R., Posner M.I. (2000)
Cognitive neuroscience. Current Opinion in Neurobiology, 10: 612-624.

We know where in the brain are processing memory, emotions, and other cognitive functions.
Where are those functional areas in the brain?

See here: http://www.strokecenter.org/education/ais_images/ais046-lg.jpg

Follow this link for Brodmann`s areas. This is cytoarchitectonic map from 1909, but still uesfull. Many of those
areas are parts of functional areas, for example - primary visual cortex is 17 BA, primary auditory cortex is
41, 42 BA and motor speech cortex (Broca`s area) is 44 BA.

Check this image - surface of macaque (rhesus) monkey cerebral cortex with distinct functional areas marked.
Lateral view of monkey brain you will find at the right top and medial view of monkey cortex you will find at the
bottom on the right side. All color areas are visual areas. Notice how large is visual cortex in macaque
- more than 50% of all cortex! Numbers are equivalent of Brodmann`s Areas (BA).
